Evolution of the UMAE

For those who attended the June 4 meeting, you are aware of the evolution of the UMAE.  For those who were not in attendance, here are the basics:

• The UMAE will now be housed under the VP Admin, with Brigitte overseeing the group.
• It will still be the University of Manitoba Advisor Exchange (UMAE).
• Meetings will still take place over the year, with similar content, sharing and professional development opportunities.
• Brigitte will be putting a call out for volunteers to be a part of an advisory group, similar to the executive team.  This group will help plan and facilitate the meetings going forward.

Summer!

Last week's meeting marked the last meeting we'll have for a while. Our next General UMAE meeting will be in the fall.  You can view the past year's meeting summaries and presentations HERE on the blog.

If you have any information that you'd like to share with the group, please let one of the executive members know.  We will continue to send out information over the next few months.

Action items from the last UMAE General Meeting

 

·        NACADA Region 6 Conference (May 17-19) – early bird deadline is April 25, register online HERE.

 

o   There are volunteer opportunities available at the conference, it’s a great way to get more involved if you’re already attending!  Please contact Jean Lyon for more information (jean.lyon@umanitoba.ca).

 

·        A reminder from Brigitte about completing her survey:

 

We are asking for your help in determining how the Career Compass is being put into process across the university.  All comments and data will be kept confidential; we will not identify the role or unit from which the responses were made.  We will be using the responses in 2 ways:  (1) In a presentation at the NACADA Region 6 Conference in Winnipeg (May, 2017), and (2) To continue to develop the Compass.

·        At the next UMAE general meeting we will be having Janelle Ritchot and representatives from Université de Saint-Boniface presenting.  If you have any questions regarding their programs, processes or the relationship between U of M and USB, please email them to me.  I will then forward those onto Janelle so they can be addressed at the June 6 meeting.

New Executive

We have a new UMAE Executive team!  We had 1 nomination for each position, therefore those people won by acclamation.  Please join us in welcoming:

• Lesley Friesen (Faculty of Arts) - Vice-President
• Kathy Synkiw (Faculty of Science) - Communications Chair
• Carla Loewen (Indigenous Student Centre) - Membership Chair

Welcome back!

We hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to tackle another academic year!

As we discussed at the last general meeting, this fall Christine Adams will be completing her 2 year term and will be ending her time as President of the UMAE Exec.  The current Vice-President (Kristin Suffield) will be moving into the President position.  This means we have some electing to do!

Being a part of the UMAE  Executive is a great opportunity to get some committee experience, network and be a part of the future of Academic Advising on campus.  We hope you consider joining our team!

The positions up for election are:

- Vice-President (2 year term, followed by 2 years as President = 4 years total)
- Membership Chair (2 year term)
- Communications Chair (2 year term)

We will be putting out the call for nominations in a few weeks, so start thinking if you would be interested in putting your name forward.  Elections will happen in early October, with the deadline being the next General Meeting.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the current UMAE exec.
